My First European Christmas Market Trip: Why Prague Was the Perfect Place to Start

For years, I dreamed of visiting Europe’s Christmas markets. It was something my mom had always wanted to do, but never got the chance. So when I finally booked the trip, it wasn’t just about ticking off a bucket-list experience… it was personal.

We picked Prague because it was already on our travel wish list, and in December, the city transforms into a true winter fairytale. What better way to experience the markets than wrapped inside a city that’s already filled with charm?

The Christmas Market Scene in Prague

There are several markets around Prague, but the most famous one is in Old Town Square.

It’s big, busy, and beautiful. Picture a giant Christmas tree glowing against the backdrop of gothic architecture, wooden stalls selling handmade ornaments, and the smell of sausages and mulled wine in the air. A choir was singing carols when we arrived, and there was even a little petting zoo tucked into one corner.

It felt magical, but also very crowded. We went midweek and still found ourselves in the thick of it. Just something to be prepared for if you go during peak season.

One of my favorite parts of the trip wasn’t even something we planned.

About a 20-minute walk south of Old Town, we stumbled across a smaller market. It felt more local and less polished in the best way. The prices were lower, the pace was slower, and we could actually chat with the vendors.

We picked up some Christmas cookies from a generational bakery and hand-painted ornaments to bring home as gifts. The whole experience felt cozy, honest, and unhurried.

What to Eat (and Sip)

Czech markets are full of warm comfort food and sweet treats. Some of the things we tried:

  • Trdelník, a cinnamon-sugar pastry cooked over open flame

  • Bramboráky, crispy potato pancakes

  • Grilled sausages, roasted ham, and pork knuckle

  • Perníčky, traditional Czech gingerbread cookies

Hot drinks are everywhere too. We sipped glühwein (spiced wine), medovina (honey wine), and thick hot chocolate while we wandered through the stalls.

If you’re thinking about a Christmas market trip, Prague is a great place to start. Yes, it’s busy, but it’s also full of charm. You just need to balance the big must-see moments with a little wandering off the main path.

Whether you’re there for the festive food, the gifts, or just to soak up the atmosphere, it’s the kind of trip that stays with you.
